Zoot Suit Woman

Last weekend I went to the 103 club for the first time. I quite liked it there, especially for the warmly coloured walls and the fact that they have 3 different rooms where you can find the music of your choice, including a lounge. But oh my gosh, was there an awful lot of stylish young people or what. I felt so underdressed. But I finally got a chance to dance the night away to some good elektro music, which I had been wanting to do for ages.

The reason I went there was a semi-secret(?) club gig by Zoot Woman. I had only learned about it a few hours before, because some friends were going there. I was put off by the fact that they were supposed to play at 01.30, but I went anyway, and I certainly didn’t regret my decision, despite the fact that they actually played much later still. The club owners let in as many people as would fit into the whole club, which was slightly inconvenient as the band was playing in one of the 3 rooms which, as a result, was packed, to say the least. Fortunately, we managed our way into that room about one third into the concert, so we didn’t miss all of it.

I thought it funny how much band mastermind Stuart Price with his dyed blonde hair looked like Marc Almond. I didn’t have my mobile phone with me, so I couldn’t take pictures, but here’s a live video from their website instead. The band previewed some songs off their upcoming new album, but I can’t say much about them, as the sound wasn’t so good.

During the concert I remembered the interview I did with the band in 2001 (available in German only). Stuart Price wasn’t present at the time, but the other guys proved to be a nice bunch.

I also remembered the album review I had written in May 2001 for the Karrera Klub website after discovering the band. Some of it still holds true, though I view them more fondly these days…

Diese Produktion ist so glatt gebügelt und gestärkt, dass potenzieller Schweiß sofort daran abperlt. Plastic Music for Plastic People. Aus “living in a magazine” wurde in zwei Jahren Produktionsarbeit jegliches Leben gequetscht. Stuart Price a.k.a. “Jacques Lu Cont”, der zuvor mit seinem Soloprojekt “Les Rythmes Digitales” zurecht Lorbeeren bei der Dance-Fraktion einheimste, geht mit Zoot Woman jetzt zum Angriff an der Mainstream-Front über.
Für Price, der sich selbst als “Ultra-Modernist” bezeichnet, waren die Achtziger das ultimative Jahrzehnt, und so tropft hier aus jeder polierten Note ein Nachgeschmack von Roxy Music und Hall & Oates.
Die in UK bereits veröffentlichte Single “it’s automatic” weiß mit einem dezenten Spät-Siebziger-Charme zu überzeugen und der Titelsong kommt ziemlich cool mit einem verzerrten Synthie-Riff und einer eingängigen Melodie daher, ein echter Konsens-Ohrwurm.
Danach flacht es dann aber auch ab. Was bleibt, sind größtenteils unreflektierte Achtziger-Plagiate mit sterilen Funk-Gitarren und Drum-Computer-Orgien irgendwo zwischen Human League und ABC. Und dann noch diese langweilige Coverversion von Kraftwerks “Das Model”, mit der sie uns bestimmt noch diesen Sommer quälen werden.
Natürlich, bei einer “naiven” Rezeption funktioniert dieser POP-Appeal noch immer, die gefälligen Melodien laden zum Mitwippen ein. Aber wenn ich die Augen öffne, werde ich mir der letzten 15 Jahre Musikgeschichte bewusst, die sich einfach nicht wegdiskutieren lassen. Das Achtziger-Revival rollt ja immer noch unaufhaltsam, aber, mein lieber Herr Price, kann das nicht auch etwas reflektierter und ironischer geschehen? DX7-Sounds haben für mich jeglichen Charme verloren.
Trotzdem werden Zoot Woman abräumen. Sie verkörpern mit ihrer jugendlichen Naivität, ihrem Romantizismus und ihrem Glamour etwas, das viele ansprechen dürfte und sie auch gleich zu SPEX-Lieblingen inklusive Coverstory (SPEX 04/01) avancieren ließ. Sicher, ein paar Songs sind toll und es wird bestimmt coole Remixe geben, aber musste es denn gleich ein ganzes Album sein? (mk)
